As you probably know, prompt treatment of a stroke patient has a huge impact on the chances of survival. Therefore, it is important to make the public aware of what a stroke is and what its symptoms are.
What is a stroke?
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted and the brain no longer receives oxygen. The consequences can therefore be very serious, even fatal. There are different types of strokes:
- An ischemic stroke is the most common type. This occurs when a blood clot or cholesterol plaque blocks an artery (this is called an embolism or thrombosis).
- A hemorrhagic stroke is less common. It is a bleeding in the brain caused by a ruptured aneurysm, a tumor, an accident, a circulatory disorder, and so on.
- In short, a transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a blockage of an artery that resolves on its own after a few moments. Unfortunately, because of this, some people confuse a TIA with ordinary malaise. The symptoms can vary depending on the affected area of the brain. This can range from a deformed mouth to sudden blindness, speech problems, or weakness in a part of the body.
According to doctors, ten symptoms can be warning signs a few weeks before a stroke.
Some of these symptoms may already occur to a lesser extent several weeks or months before a stroke. This applies particularly to memory loss.
You must therefore pay close attention to the signals and take good care of your body. Eating healthily, keeping your cholesterol under control, and limiting alcohol and tobacco use are just a few factors that can lower the risk of a stroke.
